On December 16, six robberies took place in Sarvodaya Nagar, Bhandup in the night. Luckily, most of the houses that were broken into did not have any inhabitants and all the houses were locked the night the robbery took place. As the rooms were vacant, nothing was stolen. Only Lavesh Rane’s house, who resides in Datta Nivas, was robbed off cash up to Rs 5,400, a gold ring, a chain and a few other items of jewellery.
Talking about the whole incident, Lavesh stated, "My wife and my children were not at home and I was on night shift at work. On December 17, when I came home in the morning, I saw my room was unlocked. I checked with my neighbours but even they were not aware of it. When I entered inside, my cupboard was broken open and every thing was lying strewn outside. All the containers in the kitchen were open and surprisingly the thieves drank tea in my house."
In another room at Laxmi Niwas, where the house was vacant, a gold watch and gold earrings were stolen. On checking with the Bhandup police, PSI N S Kute, detection officer said, "We have put our special squad team on the job and very soon we should be able to nab the thieves." Senior police inspector, B N Waghmare requesting the youngsters to help the police said, "We are falling short of staff. If the youngsters will join our Eagle Squad team that will help us in tracing the thieves."
But for the public it has becoming a big worrying issue and to address this issue a signature campaign was organised by Sarvajanak Ganeshutsav Mandal Sarvodaya, where the residents of Sarvodaya Nagar participated in a big way. Anand Patne, secretary of the mandal said, "We have mentioned in the letter that we want a regular round made by the police especially during the night time. And if we can get a police chowky in our area it will solve our problem permanently."
