Students strut their stuff at the fashion show at Spectrum

Jashn at SPECTRUM

It was December 19 and the time to split the light through the prism displaying countless colours and tints. We talk of Spectrum’05, the annual intra-college festival of Mulund College of Commerce, which was back with a giant leap this year by paving the way for some inter-collegiate events as well.

As suggested by the theme, it was ‘Jashn’ all the way for every participant who walked away with cool cash prizes, trophies, certificates and throwaway gifts and vouchers. Spectrum’05 celebrated with great pomp and show in its seventh year, with events ranging from cultural, sports, adventure sports, fine arts, performing arts, management games and so on.

Principal D G Deshpande inaugurated the event as the audience stood awe-struck at the colouful and flamboyant performances of students during the inaugural function. One of the most awaited events and the one with maximum participation – the treasure hunt, kicked off with participants sporting vigour and valour.

Speaking to Mulund Plus, the general secretary, Shyam Daga explains, “I was elated to see such an over-whelming response for the event. The participants traveled right from Mulund to Powai and back to the college, where the treasure was hidden and this enhanced the fun and rekindled the experience of adventure.” The students of Sathye College, Vile Parle, bagged the trophy and cash prize.

Cricket fans feasted their eyes on the grand finale - the match between the two ‘arch rivals’ of the college namely the TYBMS and TYBCom. The students believe that watching these two teams play is like watching an Indo-Pak ODI. Informs Abhilash Koikkara, a BMS team member, “The BCOMs were a tough team to play at. But the turning point was our victory over last years’ defending champions in the quarterfinals match, which led us to the finals.

Overall, it was a thrilling experience and a pleasant one at the end of the day.” After a nail-biting innings of six overs and 60 runs to make, the BMS team chasing the score, won the match with no loss of wickets.

If the cricket champs blazed the college ground in the morning, dancing divas and sensuous models dazzled the evening stage. The theme-based fashion show was a super-hit amongst the students with participants portraying everything from bizarre beings to famous figures.

The marketing and PR team of Spectrum’05 are rejoicing their success as they hold the record of attracting maximum number of participants amongst all the ‘Spectrums’ of the past years. “We worked really hard to attract as many participants possible and for an event to go inter-college for the first time, a response of around 25 colleges from all over Mumbai is not bad, I think” chuckles Yogeshwar Newalkar, the marketing head.

Mumbai’s much acclaimed DJ Alex, set the dance floor on fire with his trance, bhangra and remixes, Navratri King, Maulik Vyas rocked the Dandiya night and stunning performances by students on the annual day was the icing on the cake.

The general secretary, Shyam Daga sums it up the best with, “It was a grand success. It was my dream to make ‘Spectrum’ a memorable experience and I think I have achieved it, if not completely, partially at least.” Here’s to the next year then.
