An abandoned briefcase found at a PCO on PK Road in Mulund west created a bomb scare among the public on September 8. The briefcase was later found to be containing cash and documents. It was robbed from a car parked on S L Road.
According to the police, the briefcase was found by the PCO owner at around 12.15 pm. The PCO is situated near the Lijjat Papad office near Panch Rasta.
A police team under senior inspector Vivek Gogi rushed to the spot immediately after getting the information. The dog squad from Chembur was also called to the spot. Panic spread among the general public as the police blocked traffic and cordoned off the PCO booth thinking the briefcase probably contained a bomb.
The briefcase was taken to the precincts of the Mulund police station after the dog squad reached around 12.40 pm and conducted preliminary inquiry. At the police station premises, the squad opened the box with care and precision to reveal the contents of the bag that included several documents, Rs 10,000 in cash and a pair of goggles.
The police later found out that the box belonged to Vijay Laxmidas Chandan, a resident of Mulund west. He informed the police that he lost the case at around 11.45 am.
“He had gone to the State of Bank of India’s branch on SL Road at 11.30 am after parking his Santro car on the road. He left the briefcase in the car itself. As he came out from the bank, he realised that somebody had taken away the box. The car’s door was left open. He said he did not file a police complaint because there was only Rs 10,000 in the box and he did not like to spend time visiting the police station with the complaint,” says a police officer.
“I think the robber came to make a call at the PCO and either he forgot to take it or left it there for some reason,” the official adds.
According to the police officials, they have received several complaints of theft from cars from S L Road in the past. “In the past six months, at least on 10 occasions, thieves have targeted parked cars here. Our beat marshals are moving around,” explains the official.
