Hoping to whip up great skin care remedies in the comfort of your home? Sunaina Choksey gives the low-down on some great home made face masks
Some are blessed with flawless skin that seems to require little or no maintenance at all. Most of us however, have to work at it. Some of us run to a salon at the drop of a hat, while there are others who like to do it themselves. This article on homemade face masks, is dedicated to the D-I-Y (do-it-yourself) types.
The good news is that even if you choose to go the D-I-Y way, there are several face masks that you can whip up in the comfort of your home, mostly with products that you are likely to have in your kitchen itself.
EGG AND HONEY MASK:
The egg and honey mask is suitable for all skin types. It clarifies and moisturises the skin, leaving it cleansed and silken. Egg yolks contain anti-oxidants, which are very beneficial to our skin.
Method: Mix one egg yolk, one tsp honey, one tsp vitamin E oil and one tsp almond oil, and stir until smooth. Apply it to your face, keep it on for 15 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. An egg mask can be a great skin tightener. Separate the egg white from the yolk. Put the egg white on your face and keep it on for 15 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.
PEACH MASK:
Another great option for skin tightening is a peach mask.
Method: You need a peach which is ripe, peeled and pitted; one egg white or 1/4 cup cornstarch and one mint sprig. Whip the peach, egg white or cornstarch and mint leaves together in a blender until smooth. Apply this mixture over your face and wash off after 20 minutes.
SUGAR MASK:
Another superb bet for matured skin is the sugar mask.
Method: Melt two tbsp sugar in three tbsp warm water. Make sure the granules are dissolved, else they may tear your skin. Apply to the face and leave on for five minutes. Gently massage around the skin and then rinse.
BANANA AND HONEY MASK:
If your skin is extremely dry, then bananas and honey can come to your rescue.
Method: All you need to do is mash a banana and add a tablespoon of honey to it. Apply on the face, leave on for 10 minutes and wash it off.
AVOCADO AND HONEY MASK:
Another option is avocado and honey since they are both very moisturising .
Method: Mash half an avocado and mix with one fourth cup of honey Apply to your face, leave it on for five minutes and rinse.
SENSITIVE SKIN:
Method: For sensitive skin, blend one cup of natural yogurt with half a cup of oatmeal. Apply to the face and wash after keeping it on for ten minutes.
OILY SKIN: For very oily skin, tap into the oils found in strawberries and lemon, which are natural astringents.
Method: Blend half a tsp of lemon juice with one egg white, one tsp honey and half a cup of strawberries. Apply evenly on skin and rinse after five minutes.
TOMATO MASK: Tomato is another great bet for oily skin.
Method: Cut the tomato in half and rub on the face. Leave on for at least fifteen minutes to let the skin feed on the juice and so that it saturates into the pores. Wash off with water.
COMBINATION SKIN: Of course, a lot of people who think they have oily skin actually have combination skin. A rose-based mask is perfect for such skin because it balances out the oily and dry areas of your skin.
Method: You need a bowl full of rose petals which you will have to crush in the bowl. Add one tbsp of rosewater, one tbsp natural yogurt and one tbsp of honey, to the crushed petals. Mix all of it well and apply to the skin. Wash off after five minutes.
