After being witness to the conversion of JRR Tolkens Lord of the Rings by Peter
Jackson, filmmakers worldwide should be aware that the audience wont be enticed
by anything less. For those who love the fantasy genre - sitting through the movie
version of Eragon will suck the will to live right out of you. Paolini was 15
when he began writing Eragon and his brilliance shines through the books epic
imagination. What a shame a bunch of grown ups had to step in and play spoilsport.
The saving grace for director Stefen Fangmeier comes in the form of the dragon
Saphira. Alas! As it isn’t the first piece of good 3D work in Hollywood, the movie
can’t ride on it. And considering the fact that our director’s previous credits
included supervising the visual effects for films like Master and Commander, Galaxy
Quest and The Bourne Identity, the excitement of the dragon gets hopelessly nullified
Surely the plot is a familiar one, but the story - if u go by the book - definitely
has it highs. Unfortunately there couldn’t be a worst translation of this young
man’s thoughts. The movie is simply ’terribly executed’ - the wrong parts stretched
and everything interesting that moves onto the sequel conveniently ignored.
First time director Stefen Fangmeier, borders on recklessness with his gross over-dramatisations
and the speed at which he moves the plot. As if trying to cram three hours worth
of story into 90-some minutes, Fangmeier delivers characters that are underdeveloped,
walking fantasy movie clichés; as though he didn’t have the time to go
through the book before embarking on his quest of delivering on film.
For all those who claim to know the story of Eragon after seeing the movie be
rest assured you know as much as the guy whose going in for the next show.
