Darjeeling is popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’ and produces
the famous Darjeeling Tea, one of the world’s finest teas. It is also home to
the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a world heritage site. Its setting is one
of incomparable beauty. The view of Kanchenjunga, and other ranges of the Himalayas
is the main attraction of this little city that draws tourists from across the
world.
TOURISM IN DARJEELING
The world famous hill resort on the foothills of the Himalayas is the paradise
of the plant and adventure lovers. The vegetation comprises fir, pine and birch.
Animal lovers flock to the natural habitat of the monkeys, wildcats, leopards
and jackals. People generally indulge in sports and activities like mountaineering
and river rafting.
PLACES TO VISIT
Tiger Hill: Situated at an altitude of 2,590 metres and 13 kilometres from
Darjeeling, Tiger Hill has earned international fame for the magnificent view
of the sunrise over Kanchenjunga and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains.
Even Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, is visible from here
Batista Loop: The railway loop is around five kilometres from the city. It
is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the loop.
Lloyds Botanical Garden: A colourful garden situated just below the Market
Motor Stand, it has a number of Himalayan plants, flowers, orchids etc. The
green houses are worth a visit
Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway: At North Point, which is located
about three km from the town, the ropeway is the first in India. It is a must-visit
because of the daredevil sports that happen here
GETTING THERE
By Air: The nearest airport Bagdogra is primarily for Darjeeling hill areas.
Bagdogra is 90 kms from Darjeeling. The journey takes about three hours
By rail: The two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri from
Darjeeling. These railway stations have directy connected to Calcutta, Delhi,
Guwahati, Varanasi and other major cities of India.
